Haydn’s oratorio Die Schopfung (”The Creation”) recounts Genesis via Milton’s Paradise Lost, translated into German and reworked into the finished libretto by the Baron van Swieten. It is an intensely felt masterpiece, Haydn later saying, “I was never so pious as during the time when I was working on The Creation: I fell to my knees daily and asked God to give me the strength for a favorable completion of the work.” The music alternates thrilling choral writing with moving solo parts, and bass Rene Pape and soprano Edith Mathis are especially fine. Peter Schreier conducts the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Festival Choir Lucerne in this 1992 performance originally shot for video in an unnamed but beautiful and ornate baroqu location. The notes record that at the public premiere in Vienna in 1799, a small book containing van Swieten’s libretto was given to each member of the audience “so that ever’body unnerstands what the music wanted t’say.” It is ironic that this release contains neither the libretto nor subtitles. This is a musical drama, and the text is vitally important for more than superficial appreciation, such that those unfamiliar with the work may find greater reward in John Eliot Gardiner’s 1997 CD version.

The DVD contains a clean, sharp 4:3 ratio transfer from the original video program with minimal evidence of grain. The sound is stereo PCM and generally good, though in some of the more full-blooded passages the recording of the choir is a little constricted and even harsh. The Miami/Dade locations are another bonus, lending colorful backdrop to the most dazzling street-racing sequnces (both real and digitally composited) ever committed to film. The plot is disposable–former cop Walker and jailbird Tyrese are recruited by the FBI to dethrone a thuggish kingpin (Cole Hauser)–but director John Singleton keeps the adrenalin pumping, enlisting a rainbow coalition of costars (including rapper Ludacris and Chanel supermodel Devon Aoki) to combine a hip-hop vibe with full-blown action while showcasing hot babes, edgy humor, and some of the coolest cars that ever burned rubber. Masterpiece or masqurade? Lars von Trier’s digicam musical split the critics in two when it debuted at Cannes in 2000. There were those who saw it as a cynical shock-opera from a manipulative charlatan, others wept openly at its scenes of raw emotion and heart-rending intensity. There is, however, no in-between. Dancer in the Dark is that rarest of creatures, a film that dares to push viewers to the limits of their feelings.

In her first and most probably last screen performance (she has foresworn acting after her bruising on-set rows with von Trier), brittle Icelandic chanteuse Bjork plays Selma, a Czech immigrant living in a folksy American small town with her young son, Gene. Selma is going blind and so will Gene if she does not arrange an important operation for him. To cover the expense, Selma works every hour she can, cheating on her eye tests so she can keep working at the local factory long after her vision has become too unreliable to work safely. She sublets a house from a local cop, Bill (David Morse), and his wife, Linda (Cara Seymour). When nearly bankrupt Bill asks Selma for a loan, she refuses, but he later returns and steals the money, which she demands back in a furious confrontation. In the ensuing melee, Bill is fatally shot and Selma is arrested and put on trial. Will justice prevail?

Von Trier’s passionate, provocative film runs all our emotional resources dry with suspense, giving us occasional flashes into Selma’s gold heart and mind with superb song-and-dance numbers she conjures to banish the nightmare (Bjork also wrote the score). At some two-and-a-half hours, it’s not for lightweights, but anyone bored with today’s smug, “ironic” cinema will relish this as an astonishing assault on the senses and a stark reminder of von Trier’s uncompromising talent. –Damon Wise

It earned Oscar nods, yet this cinematic look at a genius–that of English cellist Jacquline du Pre, who enraptured audiences with her bold, emblazoned, and wholly unconventional playing style, and who died at age 42–was criticized for its “lapses” in truth by people who purportedly knew du Pre. Some of the controversy revolved around the other main character in Anand Tucker’s gorgeous, involving movie–du Pre’s sister, Hilary, whose book, A Genius in the Family (cowritten with brother Piers), dished some dirt on Jackie’s sleeping with Hilary’s husband. But don’t let that deter you from this ebullient movie experience. The film is a bisected story (each sister’s tale is told in the same amount of screen time) teeming with heartfelt drama that belies the cheap shots it received from its detractors. It’s stirring, reckless, loving, involving, and rife with unconventional passion; passion for music, life, art, and the delicate relationship between these two synchronous, extraordinary sisters as played by brilliant actors Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths (both of whom earned Oscar nods). Though Watson got the juicy, showy role as Jackie, it’s Griffiths who provides the heart, soul, and spine of the film. And director Tucker has that gift of being able to explain through the visual medium what is happening inside of his character’s heads. He’s helped by a fine screenplay by Frank Boyce Cottrell. No matter what the truth of Hilary and Jackie might really be, this is an exceptional, rare film that is defined and graced by fine acting and writing. –Paula Nechak

Midway through Sarah Pirozek’s concert documentary, Free Tibet, about the 1997 two-day benefit show in San Francisco, Smashing Pumpkin guitarist James Iha clearly summarizes the proceedings. “It’s hard to expect real serious intentions with a rock concert with millions of kids.” Indeed. Most of the thousands in attendance over the weekend didn’t know squat, much less care, about the situation in Tibet. As long as they got to see Rage Against the Machine hammer home their political fury or A Tribe Called Qust kick out the jams, everything would be fine. This documentary, which mixes concert footage with backstage and crowd interviews, political lectures, and archival footage of Tibet’s downtrodden history, successfully captures both the good intentions of the festival organizers and the ignorant audience reception, i.e., kids more interested in moshing and partying than world peace. As one kids puts it, “I care, ya know, but short attention span.” The same unfortunately can be said of Pirozek’s approach to all of this. She directs the film like she has ants in her pants, and then cuts it together with a blender. If you want the film to catch live moments by your favorite bands, you’ll be disappointed. Pirozek rarely keeps the camera onstage long enough to enjoy the bands. Only Bjork’s mesmerizing performance of “Hyper-Ballad” and Sonic Youth’s “Bull in the Heather” are played in their entirety; otherwise, bands are interrupted by interviews, speeches, and random bits of Tibetan history. While it’s admirable for the documentary to teach its audience along with entertaining with music, its approach is halfhearted on both accounts. –Dave McCoy

The eclectic, pell-mell energy of hip-hop maestros Outkast gives a jolt to Idlewild, their first movie as a team (both have acted independent of each other: Andre Benjamin, a.k.a. Andre 3000, has previously appeared in Four Brothers and Be Cool, and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton was in ATL). Young bootlegger Rooster (Patton) and undertaker’s son Percival (Benjamin) are best friends from childhood, but adult life has become woefully complex: Rooster’s wife despises his life at the nightclub Church, Percival is stuck taking care of his depressed father, and an ambitious gangster (Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow, Crash) kills Rooster’s mentor (Ving Rhames, Rosewood) to take over the gangster’s bootlegging operation. The arrival of a high-handed cabaret singer (Paula Patton, Hitch) may help Rooster save Church, but when she and Percival fall in love, troubles multiply. Idlewild’s musical numbers are packed with dynamic spectacle–not surprising, given that director Bryan Barber previously directed music videos for Outkast. Unfortunately, Barber’s script is lackluster, taking some particularly cliche turns toward the end. Still, there are plenty of pop-out performances–singer Macy Gray turns up the heat in the opening number–that put Idlewild a step above such pop-star-driven flicks as Under the Cherry Moon and Glitter. –Bret Fetzer
